Jumie fired his weapon, blasting a man in the chest. The body spun in place before collapsing in a dramatic fashion, face down. He crouched, glancing over his shoulder to look down the other hallway while still aiming where his last target came from. His victim may have been a guard or just another mechanic, he had no way of knowing.
âWhat is going on?â A voice shouted from where the body was lying. âBleth! Are you alright? Bleth, can you hear me?â
âPeople are taking an interest in us,â Jumie called back to Zadok. The other man peeked around the corner. He was holding a gun.
Jumie took a shot but it missed, slapping the wall directly by the manâs head. The sparks made him jump, and he withdrew to cover.
âDamn it!â Jumie backed into the room. âZadok, what the hell, man? Are we done yet? That dudeâs calling for backup, I guarantee it. And weâre just sitting here still. Weâve gotta move if we donât want to get pinned down in this shitty little room.â
âAlmost done,â Zadok said. âBuy me ⦠one more minute.â
âUh huh.â Jumie returned to the door, peering out. A voice down the hall called out exactly what he feared.
âThis is Technician Seven-Two-Six down in climate control. Weâve got one, possibly more intruders. Already one man is down. Need immediate security backup. Repeat: I need immediate backup!â
âThereâs no buying you time,â Jumie said. âThereâs waiting for overwhelming firepower to get down here and tear us a new asshole. Come on, man! Whatâre you on, dial-up?â
âWhat is that?â
âDude! Donât ask! Just work!â Jumie kept his weapon aimed down the hall but he doubted his target would reveal himself with help on the way. Maybe weâre lucky. The guards might be too busy dealing with all the crap upstairs to come down here. A red light began flashing overhead. Or not.
âThis is station security,â a masculine but obviously computer voice echoed through the halls. âIntruder alert. All available hands report to climate control. Repeat, all available hands to climate control. This is not a drill. Suspects are likely armed and dangerous. Prepare yourselves accordingly.â
âDone!â Zadok shouted. He joined Jumie at the door. âHow many are out there right now?â
âJust one as far as I know.â Jumie gestured down the hall. âHeâs over there by the body. Heâs armed, but I doubt he wants any of us. I heard him announce that heâs a technician.â
âGood. We have to go back the way we came anyway.â Zadok started walking down the hall. Jumie strode beside him, staring at him. âWhat is it?â
âShouldnât we be running?â
âNah. If we walk, we look like we belong. The guards wonât shoot us immediately. Thatâll give us the advantage.â Zadok smirked. âIâve done this before. They were pretty gullible.â
âYou think they mightâve changed tactics since then?â Jumie asked. âMaybe figured out what you did?â
âI doubt it.â Zadok shrugged. âBesides, they donât want to shoot their own.â
Jumie sighed. âIf theyâre stunning people â¦â He let the sentence die. There was no point in arguing.
