Jumie fired his weapon, blasting a man in the chest. The body spun in place before collapsing in a dramatic fashion, face down. He crouched, glancing over his shoulder to look down the other hallway while still aiming where his last target came from. His victim may have been a guard or just another mechanic, he had no way of knowing.

“What is going on?” A voice shouted from where the body was lying. “Bleth! Are you alright? Bleth, can you hear me?”

“People are taking an interest in us,” Jumie called back to Zadok. The other man peeked around the corner. He was holding a gun.

Jumie took a shot but it missed, slapping the wall directly by the man’s head. The sparks made him jump, and he withdrew to cover.

“Damn it!” Jumie backed into the room. “Zadok, what the hell, man? Are we done yet? That dude’s calling for backup, I guarantee it. And we’re just sitting here still. We’ve gotta move if we don’t want to get pinned down in this shitty little room.”

“Almost done,” Zadok said. “Buy me … one more minute.”

“Uh huh.” Jumie returned to the door, peering out. A voice down the hall called out exactly what he feared.

“This is Technician Seven-Two-Six down in climate control. We’ve got one, possibly more intruders. Already one man is down. Need immediate security backup. Repeat: I need immediate backup!”

“There’s no buying you time,” Jumie said. “There’s waiting for overwhelming firepower to get down here and tear us a new asshole. Come on, man! What’re you on, dial-up?”

“What is that?”

“Dude! Don’t ask! Just work!” Jumie kept his weapon aimed down the hall but he doubted his target would reveal himself with help on the way. Maybe we’re lucky. The guards might be too busy dealing with all the crap upstairs to come down here. A red light began flashing overhead. Or not.

“This is station security,” a masculine but obviously computer voice echoed through the halls. “Intruder alert. All available hands report to climate control. Repeat, all available hands to climate control. This is not a drill. Suspects are likely armed and dangerous. Prepare yourselves accordingly.”

“Done!” Zadok shouted. He joined Jumie at the door. “How many are out there right now?”

“Just one as far as I know.” Jumie gestured down the hall. “He’s over there by the body. He’s armed, but I doubt he wants any of us. I heard him announce that he’s a technician.”

“Good. We have to go back the way we came anyway.” Zadok started walking down the hall. Jumie strode beside him, staring at him. “What is it?”

“Shouldn’t we be running?”

“Nah. If we walk, we look like we belong. The guards won’t shoot us immediately. That’ll give us the advantage.” Zadok smirked. “I’ve done this before. They were pretty gullible.”

“You think they might’ve changed tactics since then?” Jumie asked. “Maybe figured out what you did?”

“I doubt it.” Zadok shrugged. “Besides, they don’t want to shoot their own.”

Jumie sighed. “If they’re stunning people …” He let the sentence die. There was no point in arguing.
